Globalization hindering Citizenship Education: The Discussion

Globalization is one of the 21st century’s most important political topics. No one can deny that today’s world has unique challenges facing the present and future workforce.  Politicians, professors, businessmen, and leaders all have different opinions on whether globalization is good or bad. As the world grows more connected through the Internet and greater international trade, globalization is becoming more important – and more controversial – than at any other point in history.

Therefore my question is

Do you believe globalization has hindered citizenship education?”

What is your take on this?

  1. I believed that globalization hinders citizenship education but to an extent. Globalization opens our knowledge of citizenship education globally and tends to influence what is taught in the classroom. For instance, with Jamaica being part of the global community; we are going to seeing citizenship education through a global perspective instead our society's perspective.

  2. In my opinion, globalization hinders citizenship education to an extent as Mr. Black says. With the use of technology which changes everyday that aid in the hindering of citizenship education. Citizenship education is becoming globalized throughout the world and countries are looking at citizenship education on a wider scale and a more diverse approach.

  3. Globalization poses a threat to the cultures of a country as a result of various external factors such as technology and transportation. Persons are quicker to adopt other cultures and neglect their own. This negatively affects citizenship education as persons are sometimes unable to appreciate and value their culture.

    2. i agree with you ms moore.Globalization has caused the young generation to adopt various culture.it causes them to belive that a particular culture or way of life is ideal as seen on tv or internet.take for example the clothes we wear how many of us really wear our own jamaican made clothes. The male for instances prefer nike, addidas.most youth now listen to r&b,hip hop music and gravitate toward american artist more than our jamaican artist.

    3. Thats true Ms Moore as we can see in our Jamaican society that younger people gravitate towards the American culture then leave it to other people to appreciate our o we n culture

    4. I agree with you Ms. More but one of the reason why many of us are quick to adopt the American culture is because we were not educated enough about our culture and true meaning of nationalism.

  4. Computer and telecommunications technology facilitate capital flows around the world and increase the interconnectedness of individuals, ideas, and culture to an unprecedented extent. This being said it will be challenging for teachers who teach citizenship education to an extent but, it is up to them to create innovative ways to grab the interest of their students.

  5. To some extent globization has hinder or affect citizenship. With the use of techonology and with the help of social media. As you are aware technology improves are changes everyday. In Jamaica for example person are very quick to adapt to other persons than their own culture. Foreigners now adays even appreciate our rich culture more than some of us Jamaicans today.

  6. It is said that globalization is the process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology. With that view in mind I believe that globalization has done much to advance citizenship education throughout the world. For example if we should take a look at what took place in 2011 with the eruption of the Arab spring which saw the removal of several totalitarian regimes. The main weapon which was used to remove these dictators was social media. But social media could not have done it on its own, the Arab people as well the Arab diaspora made a conscious decision make change with in their respective countries. So it is quite clear that globalization has served not to hinder but to advance citizenship education throughout the globe. (Timothy Tulloch)

  7. Globalization has both negative and positive impacts on citizenship education. Positively it helps to Foster awareness of our culture and our existence. This is achieved through the use of technology. However this same factor have allowed us to lose nationalism as we tend to adopt other cultures and gravitate towards modern technology and this takes us away from our roots

  8. I believe that globalization has both a positive and a negative impact on Citizenship Education. Positive in the sense that through through the using of technological tools such tablets and phones students can learn about their culture. Negative in the sense that because of Globalization gone are the days when children would be play play ring games, say riddles, play with marbles and kite, this has been changed as many of the younger generation has adopted the American culture through the same use of technology. However,I believe Globalization has more of a negative impact on Citizenship Education than positive.
